BEFORE THE DROPOUT — 1996–2003
THE BEAT ARCHITECT.
Kanye West arrived at Roc-A-Fella Records not as a rapper — but as the producer everyone was sleeping on. He had been selling beats out of Chicago since his teens, building a signature sound around sped-up soul samples and live instrumentation that nobody else was doing in hip hop. Jay-Z's The Blueprint (2001) was the turning point: Kanye produced four tracks including 'Izzo (H.O.V.A.)' and 'Heart of the City.' The album went platinum in a week. Suddenly everyone wanted the kid from Chicago. He produced for Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Janet Jackson, and Talib Kweli — all before releasing a single album of his own. Roc-A-Fella kept him behind the boards. He had other plans.
